INTERVIEW // SOUTHERN BELLE

Hailing from: Boston, USA
Web: MySpace

Sometimes dance music is more than just about freaking out on the dance floor. Southern Belle’s Isom Innis understands this. He knows that music is more than just about the sounds – it’s also about the feel and the journey.

While he has a few tracks floating around the internet, recent track “Walk Out” is the anchor. It’s a song that looks at a break-up in the most un-Conor Oberst way possible, and that’s exactly what we need these days.

VISUAL // FLORENCE & THE MACHINE

Normally I wouldn’t cover an artist quite as big as Florence & the Machine, but this is unique occasion. I came across this clip via a tweet from XFM DJ Marsha Shandur – it’s a rare 1935 version of A Midsummer’s Nights Dream with “Rabbit Heart (Raise if Up)” playing over it.

It’s amazing how well it matches up. Watch it now before the label takes it down.

Congrats on the great job by Pretty Monkey Studio.

VISUAL // HELLO SEAHORSE! “CRIMINAL”

Hailing from: Mexico City, Mexico
Web: MySpace

Late last summer our ears were turned on their ears when we were exposed to all of the exciting sounds currently coming out of Mexico. Without getting into a long list bands, at least not right now, one of our favourites were (and still remain) three-piece electro/indie unit Hello Seahorse!

VISUAL // IS TROPICAL “WHEN O’ WHEN”

Hailing from: London, England
Web: MySpace

I think I may have invented a new term for the kind of music Is Tropical plays: Eclectro. It’s probably already been used, but I’m just going to keep believing I invented it.

Their track “When O’ When” starts off simple enough, then suddenly starts shooting off in all directions. The result is a catchy tune layered in many genres. NewIslands have done an awesome remix of “When O’ When,” which is available over at hitclubblog.blogspot.com.

The band is currently touring the UK and has a 7″ available at the Pure Groove webstore.

VISUAL // GOLDHAWKS “WHERE IN THE WORLD”

Hailing from: London, England
Web: MySpace

At first listen, you too may try to figure out who this band sounds like. WIth vocals that go from low to high in a heartbeat, and a steady drum beat throughout, you too may think, this sounds familiar.

AUDIO // LEIF + THE FUTURE

Hailing from: Bergen, Norway
Web: MySpace

With guitars tuned to The Cure and vocals reminiscent of Echo and the Bunnymen, it’s safe to say that this Norweigan quintet is influenced by classic New Wave. Their bio on last.fm is a fantastical yarn that tells us that the band is still working on their debut album and has no release date. So while we wait patiently, here’s “Let You Go.” The single is out now on iTunes worldwide.

FLASHBACK // KUBICHEK!

“this town is emptied for the last time”

Hailing from: Newcastle, England
Web: MySpace

Although the intent of looking back at bands that have moved on is go back more than just a few years, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this four piece. During their five years together, they managed to release a handful of singles and an absolutely excellent debut album, Not Enough Night.

After some rocky times for the outfit, the final nail in their coffin came in July of ’08.
While they never did get they major acclaim they had been gunning for, to this day I still regularly run into people that swear by their one and only album. It’s a post-punk gem that deserves to be heard by more people.

AUDIO // HONOUR BEFORE GLORY

Hailing from: Leeds, England
Web: Official Website

Perhaps we’re never ready for the break-up of one of our favourite bands, but it happens all too often. While ¬°Forward, Russia! didn’t go out on their best foot, Life Processes is still an excellent statement from a band that set high expectations from the onset.

Since this “break” is “for the foreseeable future,” all of the members are firmly entrenched in life after FR. Tom Woodhead has been working on other projects, including producing Leicester group Minnaars, who have been heralded for a longtime round these parts. Katie Nicholls moved to Nottingham for art school and is in another band, while her brother Whiskas joined Leeds-based Duels as a full-time member.

VISUAL // NEWISLANDS “OUT OF TIME”

Hailing from: London, England (via Northampton)
Web: MySpace

We first wrote about NewIslands at the tail end of the summer last year after grabbing ahold of a few of the band’s demos. At the time they were a secret known by just a handful of people, but since then things have really changed. The band has been heralded by the likes of NME, CMU, and Artrocker, and their debut 7″ will be dropping this Monday on YouWillBeFollowing Records.

Here’s the band’s first proper video.

What an absurdly brilliant video – read more about it here. Lone Wolf is touring England now with Wild Beasts. Look for a release on Bella Union in the near future.
