By this point, we all know that the Thamesbeat scene was a journalistic creation, but it can’t be denied that there were a handful of loosely associated bands that were knocking about with similar ideas.

Some of these acts are still going strong, like Good Shoes, Mystery Jets, and Jamie T. On the other hand, Larrikin Love flamed out quickly, releasing a handful of singles and a solid album entitled The Freedom Spark.

FLASHBACK // MOTHER VULPINE KEEP YOUR WITS SHARP (HER WORDS ARE QUICK)”

Although together for a very short time – early ’06 until the end of ’07 – Mother Vulpine left us with a handful of very promising songs that had riffs reminiscent of QOTSA and a rhythm section that’s usually reserved for a much trendier band.  They never made their split official, but a note they posted in September 2007 made it clear that the future didn’t seem too bright.

While their output was limited, it’s a band that remains one of my favorites to this day. If you’ve yet to hear, go to their MySpace page and start with “We’ll Be Detectives.” You’ll be sold in an instant.

FLASHBACK // KUBICHEK!

“this town is emptied for the last time”

Although the intent of looking back at bands that have moved on is go back more than just a few years, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this four piece. During their five years together, they managed to release a handful of singles and an absolutely excellent debut album, Not Enough Night.

After some rocky times for the outfit, the final nail in their coffin came in July of ’08.
While they never did get they major acclaim they had been gunning for, to this day I still regularly run into people that swear by their one and only album. It’s a post-punk gem that deserves to be heard by more people.
